Psyche of the Mexicans

I just read a very provocative article on the Mexican psyche. And on one hand, I have to say it's true, they like having fun, music, dance, and joy, but there's another side to this: work ethics. People work hard, of course they might be too social at work, but they work. You have to understand that the hardworking sentiment of the Mexican culture comes from agriculture and construction workers, they have to use their hands under the warm sun to make some money.

Another myth is that Mexican = antigringo. That's far from the truth. I've seen Americans and Europeans being treated better than the rest of the population. Not because foreigners are better, because the locals value tourism and are generally interested on people. On top of that, they know that tourism is a big issue, if you think of the 20 million people that visit the country each year.

And last, but not least Machismo. I have to say this is true, but just to a certain extent. Lower income families have experienced this problem for decades, and this continues due to a perceived lack of education. But on the other hand, the younger Mexican men and women are changing. The divorce rate is going up pretty quick, there's more women in college than men, and on top of that, there are more and more women involved in politics.

So think about it, stereotypes don't guide us on the right direction.
