What does the word Mexico mean?
Hi, it's Lou again.
I've been posting some short messages on Mexican history. I find it so interesting because at the end of the day everything has some hidden background when you dig into the stories of the peoples of Mexico. Starting by the word Mexico, that is formed by three Aztec words:
1. Meztli, the word for moon.
2. Xictli, which means belly button or center.
3. Co, the word for place.
If you put it together, you get Meztli-xictli-co. That was too complicated for the Spaniard conquistadors to pronounce, so they took a shorter version: Mexico.
So, Mexico means "the center of the Moon's lake".
